Best Sports Business Podcasts to Follow

Writer: Matt FarrellMatt Farrell

I have worked in the sports business for more than 30 years with a career including the Golf Channel, USA Swimming, the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee and Warner Bros. Now, I have a boutique sports marketing consulting business working with clients across a variety of sports business sectors such as Bat Around, PBX Pickleball, the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, Toyota, USA Football, USA Pickleball and more!

So I follow the industry closely through newsletters, social posts and more and more podcasts. I have even started my own podcast - the Farrell Sports Business podcast which is on the Farrell Sports YouTube channel and in podcast-y places like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio and more.

Best Sports Business Podcasts

Here are some of personal favorites of the best sports business podcasts out there today. Links below are to Apple Podcasts, but these are available in all the normal spots.

The Petcash Pod with Andrew Petcash

This podcast leans into business and technology and the host, Andrew Petcash, really "gets it" on how to do a podcast. The podcast isn't about him and he asks short questions, doesn't interrrupt or talk over guests and genuinely feels like he is learning with the rest of us. It just has such a good flow to it! Listen here.

Sporticast

Hosted by Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams, this is one of the best out there. It is timely, informative and has real journalistic reporting chops, especially from Novy-Williams. It gets a bit campy at times, but if you can get over that it's really solid and one my go-to staples while walking the dogs! Listen here.

SBJ Morning Buzzcast

This is a great meat and potatoes daily podcast that is usally about 10 minutes with the latest in the sports business. SBJ generally leans toward covering the major pro leagues in its coverage, which isn't a bad thing, but that just doesn't always impact my interests for broader coverage of the sports world. Major rights deals for the NFL or NBA are interesting, but would love to see other sports properties represented more. The Hollywood Reporter covers the major studios and Brad Pitt, I get it. Still a daily staple. Listen here.

Sports Media with Richard Deitsch

The host Richard Deitsch feels like a pros pro and is extremely knowledgeable about the sports media landscape. He is a huge advocate for women's sports, basketball in particular, so really provides a wide range of guests. He is a former Sports Illustrated writer and now with The Athletic covering sports media. You can almost envision every team and league PR office thinking about how to get on his pod. He will ask tough questions, so it's not a cake walk for a guest but he's always fair. One of my favorites. Listen here.

Front Office Sports Today

A daily pod similar to SBJ with the latest news in sports business. I am new to this one, so will give it a bit more time to formulate some thoughts. FOS is always solid with newsletters, digital content so no doubt this one will be good. Listen here.

Navigating Sports Business

Navigant Sports is one of the industry leaders in sports research, so their Rolodex of guests is impressive on this podcast. It has a nice style to it that is easy to listen to and very informative. I also love how they focus on their interview subject's personal career path as well. Listen here.

The Sports Media Podcast

This is another product of the Sports Business Journal and is a fun one that varies its guests, hits multiple topics per episode and brings in multiple voices throughout. I find this one entertaining and is also doing a great job of drawing A-level sports industry guests. Listen here.

SportsTravel Podcast

Sports travel is a $52 billion industry, which is mind blowing. Host Jason Gewirtz, Executive Editor and Publisher of SportsTravel Magazine, is the host and talks with leaders from leagues, governing bodies, sports commissions and more. It's a master's class on the economics of events and travel within the sports industry. Listen here.

More to Come!

A few on my "to do" list for the future ... Leaders Sports Business and SI Media with Jimmy Traina. Looking forward to the one with Traina, but the hour+ length has me a bit intimidated to start, not going to lie! ;-) I will add ones as I come across them.
